Jesus – The Man

Jesus was a man of compassion, courage, and conviction. He cared for those no one else cared for, stood up to those no one else would stand up to, and literally gave His life to save the very one’s who killed him. But what sets Jesus apart from every other person in history was the fact that He didn’t stay dead. He came back to life after three days in the grave, and then ascended into heaven 40 days later. He proved He was much more than just a man.

He was born roughly 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem, a small rural town 10 km south of Jerusalem. He was born into humble circumstances – to a teenage virgin mother – and lived a relatively quiet life, working as a carpenter until the age of 30. At this time, Jesus began his public ministry, which lasted three years.

During these three years, Jesus performed innumerable miracles: healing the sick, raising the dead back to life, setting the tormented free, helping the poor, opening blind eyes, and displaying a compassion for others that the world had never seen before. Not only did He do a lot of good things, but He proclaimed that He was God. He forgave sin: permanently wiping away people’s wrongdoings. So, either He was a liar, a lunatic, or He was who He said He was.
Even His own disciples – His closest companions – didn’t realize who He was, until after He died and came back to life. It had been foretold in ancient Jewish prophecies that the Messiah, the Christ (two synonymous terms for God’s Chosen One, the Saviour) would come. After Jesus came back to life, it was clear to His disciples that He truly was the Christ, the Messiah, the Saviour of the world. Not only did He overcome death itself, but He historically fulfilled over 300 prophecies – proclaimed by over a dozen Jewish prophets over a period exceeding 900 years, with the final prophecy culminating more than 400 years before Jesus was born. Additionally, over 500 people witnessed His ascension into heaven, 40 days after His resurrection.

Jesus – The Mission

From the beginning of time, God has wanted to have a loving relationship with each human being, but love is not love if it is forced. It must be a choice – a decision made by a free will. If He made us love Him, it wouldn’t be love. Therefore, other options had to exist, and God provided people with the choice of not loving Him, of not knowing Him.

Not only are there competing alternatives for our affection, but God is perfect. He is holy. Having imperfection in His presence would pollute His purity. This is why no one can get to heaven on their own. Heaven is perfect, so it is impossible for imperfect people to enter. And, if we’re honest, we’ll admit that we’re all imperfect. Everyone of us has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Furthermore, God is just, which means everyone must pay the price for what they’ve done. This is why hell exists. It’s a place of torment, where people are forever separated from God and permanently pay the price for the wrong they’ve done. This is a huge problem!

It’s also a huge problem for the One who made us. After all, God made us to love Him and intimately know Him. This is why Jesus had to come to earth, as God in human form. Someone had to pay the price for sin, so Jesus came to be our sacrificial substitute. He came to die on our behalf, to pay the debt we owed, to take our punishment upon Himself. This was His mission: to save us. He lived a perfect and sinless life, making Him the only sufficient substitute  – the only one worthy to face the righteous judgement of God in our stead.

But even more importantly, He rose from the dead, giving Him victory over death. His perfection made Him the only legitimate substitute to take our place. His death paid the price for our transgressions. And His resurrection sealed the deal – confirming His authority over the grave, and offering us everlasting life in Him.

Jesus – The Message

So how can I access this everlasting life? How can I have my sins forgiven, so that I can stand blameless before God? This was Jesus message.

He said that He was the Way to God, the gate that we must enter. We must come to HIM. We must have a relationship with Him.

But how can I do that? How can I have a relationship with Jesus?

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord – literally, the Ruler and Master of your life – and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

It’s that simple. It’s faith. Sincerely believe on the Lord Jesus Christ – that He is your Master and God’s chosen one – and you will be saved. Saved from your sin. Saved from hell. And saved from the corruption of this earth, including disease, torment, depression, poverty, and every other evil.

But what if I find it hard to have faith? What if I want to believe, but struggle. It sounds too good to be true.

Faith comes by hearing God’s Word, the Bible. It is imperative to read the Bible regularly. Find a translation that you can understand, and commit yourself to studying it. God gave us His Word to guide and instruct us. Unlike any other book, God’s Word is alive – because He is alive! God’s Word will change you, from the inside out. Your heart will change, and your actions will change to become more like Him. Put into practice what it says. It will transform you!

But don’t stop there! Develop a relationship with Jesus by talking to Him: that’s really what prayer is, just talking to God. He said in His Word, if we call to Him, He will answer. A relationship goes two-ways, so wait to hear His voice. He will speak to you, when you come to Him in truth, out of a pure and sincere heart.

And lastly, coming to church helps too, because it is a way of surrounding yourself with those who love Jesus and will encourage you in your walk with Him. This is why Horizon Church exists. We want to see you fall in love with Jesus, walk with Him, and live out the exciting adventure He has for you!
